Why ‘Mediscare’ May Not Work This Time – Kansas City Star   “Historically, politicians proposing entitlement reform lose in the face of hysterical attacks from the programs’ defenders. Two things are different this year. The Obama administration, not Romney, approved cuts in Medicare’s growth for today’s seniors. That means the usual ‘Mediscare’ campaign will have diminished credibility. And a long-running movie has been playing in Europe, showing what happens when countries refuse to get their fiscal houses in order. There’s a good chance Americans don’t want to be in that movie.”

It’s about Spending, Not Taxes – Detroit News  “There’s absolutely no use trying to explain to these crusaders for justice that Romney pays 13 percent because 1.) He reduces his taxable income with millions in charitable donations, and 2.) His income derives primarily from capital gains on investments, which are taxed at a lower rate than income from a paycheck. America doesn’t have a tax problem, or a tax fairness problem. Not when the top 5 percent of earners shoulder 60 percent of the income tax burden and the bottom 49 percent pay 0 percent. America has a spending problem. The government spends one-third more each year than it takes in. Nothing in Romney’s tax returns will offer insights into how to fix that.”

Obamacare at Center Stage – Weekly Standard  “… they wanted to launch a brand-new federal health care entitlement—and they needed a way (at least on paper) to pay for it. They were only willing to fund about half of it with tax hikes, so they needed to come up with a lot of additional money. Their chosen funding source is now coming back to haunt them. … It is doing so as Democrats try to ride to victory by demagoguing Paul Ryan’s (and Mitt Romney’s) proposed Medicare reforms—which would help keep Medicare (and the nation) solvent by giving future seniors more freedom, more choice, and more opportunity to pursue value. But raising the Medicare issue also brings to light this inconvenient fact: Medicare is where the Democrats decided to get the rest of the money to fund Obamacare.”

California Doesn’t Exist—It’s Now Two States – Investor’s Business Daily  “Driving across California is like going from Mississippi to Massachusetts without crossing a state line. … On the coast, it’s politically incorrect to talk of illegal immigration. In the interior, residents see first-hand the bankrupting effects on schools, courts and health care when millions arrive illegally without English-language fluency or a high school diploma — and send back billions of dollars to Mexico and other Latin American countries. The drive from Fresno to Palo Alto takes three hours, but you might as well be rocketing from Earth to the moon.”
