More Lerner Emails Destroyed – Just An Accident, Right?

IRS lost emails by Nate Beeler, The Columbus DispatchBy Investor’s Business Daily

The IRS scandal, which enters its 778th day on Friday, continues to canker. Now we learn than as many as 24,000 congressionally subpoenaed emails have been deleted. Someone needs to be held accountable.

In May 2013, Lois Lerner, then director of the IRS’ Exempt Organizations Division, acknowledged that the agency had given especially hard looks at applications for tax-exempt status from groups that had the words “tea party” or “patriot” in their title.

She wouldn’t admit it, but the IRS was passively harassing groups it felt were President Obama’s political opponents and a threat to his 2012 re-election. The inspector general’s report said applications filed by several hundred groups were delayed for a year or more. Some were subjected to demanding questions about their donors and interrogated about their activities.

Since then, the House has voted to hold Lerner in contempt — six Democrats joined every Republican in the vote — Lerner has resigned and Congress has launched a probe into emailgate.

The IRS cannot be considered a cooperative partner in the process. And this week’s admission under oath from the Treasury inspector general for tax administration that as many as 24,000 Lerner emails have been erased looks to be just more IRS stonewalling.

It is precisely that history of intransigence that makes the disappearance of those emails look more like a desperate act to evade justice than the simple human accident it’s being characterized as.

Misplacing and destroying emails is a recurring habit practiced by what can be legitimately called a rogue agency that’s tried to obstruct a proper congressional investigation.

The Lerner emails that have been recovered are revealing, however. She wrote of conservative “***holes” and equated Republicans to “teRrorists.”

… Neither has IRS Commissioner John Koskinen, who appears to have repeatedly lied to Congress. National Review’s Joel Gehrke reports that House Republicans are “seriously considering” impeaching Koskinen.

Someone should pay, and dearly, for what the IRS did to conservative groups and for its apparent subversion of our election. Its actions were intentional and instrumental in Obama’s re-election.
