Obama to Congress: Close Guantanamo — or No Defense Bill… – Roll Call … “President Barack Obama’s veto threat over the National Defense Authorization Act isn’t just about the money. ‘The current version that was passed through the House of Representatives is something that the president would veto principally because of this — of the irresponsible way that it funds our national defense priorities, but also because of the efforts to prevent the closure [of] the prison at Guantánamo Bay,’ White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said Monday. ‘So our position on this hasn’t changed. We continue to feel strongly about it.’ In July, Earnest said Obama ‘will veto’ the bill if it includes the Guantánamo provisions. Earnest told reporters Monday the president has the votes to sustain a veto.”
“Senate Armed Services Chairman John McCain, R-Ariz., has said the White House promised him a plan to close the prison, but has yet to present one. Without that, he has said he wouldn’t be able to find the votes to do what the White House wants. And there are certainly people on Capitol Hill who wonder whether Obama will ultimately veto the bill — or the next version, if a budget deal is reached — over Guantánamo. The defense policy bill has become law for more than 50 years in a row, and Obama has signed it every year despite issuing veto threats over the military prison in Cuba.”
COMMENT: Simply more proof that President Obama is more interested in his personal legacies, than in protecting the national interests of the country by approving the National defense Authorization Act.
Record 63.2 Million Non-English Speaking Residents, Surge in Arabic, Chinese, Spanish – Washington Examiner … “More than one in five U.S. residents speak a language other than English at home, a record, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. In an analysis of the recent Census American Community Survey, a huge surge was recorded in those who speak Chinese, Spanish, Arabic and Urdu, Pakistan’s national language. The report from the Center for Immigration Studies documented the growth of immigrants in the United States and provided evidence of concerns new immigrants are slow to assimilate into American culture, namely by speaking English at home. Overall, wrote the Center’s Steven A. Camarota and Karen Zeigler, the number of non-English speakers has doubled since 1990.”
Dems Move to Shut Down Benghazi Committee – Washington Examiner … “Rep. Louise Slaughter, the top Democrat on the House Rules Committee, was expected to try Tuesday evening to disband the House Select Committee on Benghazi Tuesday amid backlash over comments by Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy. But her effort was almost certain to fail in the face of Republican opposition. The New York Democrat plans to ask that an amendment be made in order to legislation that would create a select committee to investigate Planned Parenthood, an aide told the Washington Examiner.”
“Republicans in the House have been working to strip Planned Parenthood of federal funding following a series of undercover videos that paint the abortion provider in an unflattering light. But Republicans on the GOP-led Rules Committee are certain to reject her attempt — If If Slaughter’s amendment were allowed, it could complicate the future of a bill that was expected to enjoy widespread Republican support. They have more votes that Democrats on the committee, and can vote down Slaughter’s proposal.”
