The TPP is Not About Free Trade

No! No! No! signs TPP, Trans-Pacific-Partnership, By Philippe Gastonne

Washington’s failure in recent years to keep careful watch over what goods are made where — especially when it comes to such vital items as electronics and drugs — means the United States now depends far more on China than vice versa. Back in the 1990s, advocates of liberalizing U.S. trade with China said economic interdependence would inevitably lead to peaceful coexistence. But one-sided dependencies invite adventurism, as China’s growing belligerence today proves.

Washington must now address the fundamental flaws in the international trade system that gave China such a big advantage. The White House claims the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership will help offset China’s increasing heft. Unfortunately, the pact, which includes 11 Pacific Rim allies but excludes Beijing, will do nothing to fix the problems. Read More..

Egg Shortage In America As Bird Flu Has Already Killed 45 MILLION Chickens And Turkeys

EggsBy Michael Snyder

Did you know that 25 percent of all egg production in the United States has already been taken offline due to the bird flu crisis?  You aren’t hearing much about this in the mainstream media, but at this point bird flu has claimed the lives of 45 million chickens and turkeys in America.  When I wrote about this a month ago, the number of dead birds was sitting at about 20 million.  In just 30 days, the death toll has risen by an astounding 20 million.  This is a major crisis and it is already causing egg shortages around the country, and yet very few people seem alarmed about this?  Why is that?

And it isn’t just one strain of the bird flu virus that we are talking about.  Right now, there are two strains which are spreading like wildfire. Read More..

Friday Vote: Congress Rushing the TPP Through Even Though They Know Americans Will Lose Jobs

American flag, ultimate corporate power grabBy Melissa Dykes

There’s nothing free about free trade.

The only reason Congress is holding out until Friday to vote on the TPP according to Politico is “They’re trying to resolve a last-minute hangup over aid for workers who lose their jobs to free trade:

House leaders, confident but not yet certain they have the support to pass sweeping trade legislation, are aiming to bring the package to a floor vote by the end of this week — even as they rush to resolve a last-minute hangup over how to pay for aid to displaced workers.

The vote to grant President Barack Obama fast-track authority to negotiate a massive Pacific Rim trade deal will be extremely tight by all accounts. Senior aides and lawmakers in GOP leadership are intent on scheduling the vote at the moment they believe they have the votes locked up — ideally by Friday, to spare supportive lawmakers the possibility of another weekend of attacks by trade foes back in their districts.

“We’re doing very well, we’re close,” Ways and Means Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), who’s been at the forefront of the GOP effort to round up support, said Tuesday of the current vote count. If Republicans want to bring the trade legislation to the floor Friday, they must decide Wednesday.

This means Congress is WELL AWARE a lot of people are about to lose their jobs once the TPP that none of us have even gotten to read goes through. Read More..

Weaken America’s Middle Class? Obama’s Asian Trade Deal Sells Out American Workers

Posted on June 12th, 2015

Trans Pacific Partnership American workersBy Peter Morici

Congress should not grant President Barack Obama authority to conclude another free trade agreement in Asia, because it would lower American wages and exacerbate income inequality.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) would eliminate tariffs and lower other regulatory barriers to trade and investment among the United States, South Korea, Japan and nine other Pacific Rim nations.

If successful, China, India and several other nations could seek membership. Hence, the TPP has the potential to redefine the rules for international commerce in the most rapidly growing region of the international economy, but President Obama has given ordinary workers good reason to believe he is not looking out for them.

In March 2012, President Obama inaugurated a free trade pact with South Korea and in many ways, it provides a template for what we may expect from a broader TPP.

Imports from South Korea are up 3.6 billion, U.S. exports are down marginally and the U.S. trade deficit with the Asian nation has swelled to 5 billion. That free trade deal alone has killed about 25,000 American jobs — mostly in high paying manufacturing activities — and added to downward pressures on wages and worsened income inequality.

Obama Admits That Climate Change Will Be in Obamatrade

Secret Trans Pacific Partnership

EDITOR’S COMMENT: No one really knows what is contained in this Obamatrade Agreement, so much so that even one of his avid Democratic supporters was recently blindsided by President Obama’s recent admission that climate change and all its regulations will, in fact, be included in this agreement.

This is precisely the problem! The text of this secret agreement needs to be publicly released. Whoever heard of a world-wide trade deal that dramatically affects the U.S. economy not being openly discussed by the politicians, media and the public. As I’ve stated, YOU CAN’T TRUST OBAMA on this or any other major legislation without verifying all the details. It is also disheartening to see a large part of the Republican leadership, having been burned so many times by Obama in the past, actively trying to pass this legislation for him, while never having even attempted to read the proposed agreement locked up in the basement of the Capitol building.

By Howard Richman

In a speech on the Senate floor on May 22, Democratic senator Ron Wyden of Oregon ridiculed those who thought climate change regulation would be part of Obamatrade:

We’ve heard suggested, for example, that it’s a backdoor route to immigration reform or action on climate change…. My sense is that the rate these hypotheticals are going, you’re bound to hear that a future president working on a trade deal might have second thoughts about the Louisiana purchase.

But in an interview on NPR’s Marketplace yesterday (June 3), President Obama said that enforcing climate change regulations will indeed be part of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the Obamatrade pact that he is currently negotiating with Malaysia and 10 other countries.  He said: Read More..

A Recession Within A Recession

Recession PublicBy Michael Snyder

On Friday, the federal government announced that the U.S. economy contracted at a 0.7 percent annual rate during the first quarter of 2015.  This unexpected shrinking of the economy is being primarily blamed on “harsh” weather during the first three months of this year and on the strengthening of the U.S. dollar.  Most economists are confident that U.S. GDP will rebound back into positive territory when the numbers for the second quarter come out, but if that does not happen we will officially meet the government’s criteria for being in another “recession”.  To make sure that the numbers for Q2 will look “acceptable”, the Bureau of Economic Analysis is about to change the way that it calculates GDP again.  They are just going to keep “seasonally adjusting” the numbers until they get what they want.  At this point, the government numbers are so full of “assumptions” and “estimates” that they don’t really bear much resemblance to reality anyway.

In fact, John Williams of has calculated that if the government was actually using honest numbers that they would show that we have continually been in a recession since 2005.  That is why I am referring to this as a “recession within a recession”.  Most people can look around and see that economic conditions for most Americans are not good, and now they are about to get even worse. Free Trade Bill Is a Sham

Posted on May 26th, 2015

Free trade billBy Monty Pelerin

The Free Trade bill is a sham. Virtually every title that Washington puts on a bill, any bill, is deceptive and designed to make it more palatable to voters. So-called “free trade” bills are notoriously deceptive. There has never been a true one and this one is merely another in a long line of shams.

How do you know? A reasonable question because only a handful of people have been allowed to see the bill and I was not one of them. There are two reasons I feel confident in my assessment. First, decades of mislabeling routinely occurs with Washington legislation. Political leopards don’t  change their spots.

Freetrade Agreements

The second and more important reason is an understanding what free trade means. This bill, as has been the case with all other claimed free trade bills, is too long. The bill is reported to be 800 to 1,000 pages in length. Hundreds or thousands of pages are not necessary for a free trade bill. Hundreds or thousands of words are not necessary Read More..

Extreme Secrecy Eroding Support for Obama’s Trade Pact

Stop Fast TrackBy Edward-Isaac Dovere

Classified briefings and bill-readings in basement rooms are making members queasy.

If you want to hear the details of the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal the Obama administration is hoping to pass, you’ve got to be a member of Congress, and you’ve got to go to classified briefings and leave your staff and cellphone at the door.

If you’re a member who wants to read the text, you’ve got to go to a room in the basement of the Capitol Visitor Center and be handed it one section at a time, watched over as you read, and forced to hand over any notes you make before leaving.

And no matter what, you can’t discuss the details of what you’ve read.

For those out to sink Obama’s free trade push, highlighting the lack of public information is becoming central to their opposition strategy: The White House isn’t even telling Congress what it’s asking for, they say, or what it’s already promised foreign governments. Read More..
